Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau was born July 12, 1817, in Concord, MA.
Henry David Thoreau was a transcendental writer who followed in the footsteps of one of his teachers, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson's work entitled Nature, was the literary work that inspired him to pursue transcendental ways (American Transcendentalism Web).
Following in the footsteeps of his teacher, Thoreau decided to spend time alone in the woods. He spent two years and two months linging in a cabin at Walden Pond. While there he wrote Walden. Thoreau decided it was time to leave the cabin and go back home because he was starting to get to comfortable and fall into predictable routines which was against transcendental ideas.

Passage from Walden's Conclusion
"Direct your eye right inward, and you'll find
A thousand regions in your mind
Yet undiscovered. Travel them, and be
Expert in home-cosmography."

In this passage some key transcendental ideas are highlighted. If you were to translate this passage into a more modern day or an easier to understand passage, it would talk about looking inside of yourself and exploring everything that goes on inside of you. By looking inside yourself you will find both God and nature because they are located inside of you. Additionally, transcendentalists find that you do not need to travel to places like Europe South America, or any where else to learn new things. Simply, you must look inside yourself to find all the you need.
